72nd Street Station — BIM Model Conversion & Redesign
Rail & Transit Infrastructure | New York MTA

Transit infrastructure modernization is as much a data problem as it is an engineering problem. When the New York MTA initiated the redesign and modernization of the 72nd Street Station, the challenge was not only to update ageing infrastructure — it was to build a digital foundation capable of supporting operations, maintenance, and asset management for decades to come. Star Knowledge Engineering Services was engaged to lead the BIM model conversion and redesign coordination for this project.
The Challenge
The project required converting existing legacy design information into a fully coordinated BIM environment that met COBie compliance requirements for long-term asset management. Maintaining data integrity across multiple engineering disciplines — structural, architectural, MEP — while simultaneously supporting an active redesign process, demanded disciplined workflow design and rigorous quality control. The MTA’s asset management requirements added a layer of data structure complexity that went beyond typical BIM coordination work.
Our Approach
SKES implemented a structured BIM conversion process that preserved and enhanced the integrity of legacy infrastructure data. COBie-compliant workflows were established from the outset, ensuring that every model element carried the asset data required for downstream operational use. Multidisciplinary coordination was managed through a centralized federated model environment, with structured review cycles keeping all disciplines aligned throughout the redesign process. Our principal’s structural engineering background — encompassing design, documentation, and construction coordination across complex institutional projects — directly informed the constructability and coordination decisions made throughout the engagement.
What We Delivered
The project delivered a fully coordinated, COBie-compliant BIM environment ready for both construction and long-term asset management. Collaboration between project teams improved significantly, coordination workflows were streamlined across disciplines, and the MTA received a robust digital infrastructure foundation aligned with their operational requirements.
